Making a Difference
The leadership and career skills development club at the Overseas Family School.
Interested in joining?
In order to join you must give Mr Woods a detailed page explaining some of your ideas about leadership and also what you would like to learn about in the group.
The meetings are held on Wednesdays at lunch time (1:45) in room K403.
There are basically three aspects to what we will be doing, all of which are meant to help you improve your abilities as a leader:
1. You will do a small research project, into an aspect of leadership that interests you and you will report back to the group on this. This way we will gather together insights into what makes a good leader and how to develop these skills, etc.
2. You
will also explore an issue or theme of your choice and then (with help) you’ll design and try to implement a small, but important change. This might be a change in the school or something else.
3. Throughout the program I (Mr Woods) will be providing short lessons on leadership and change management. I will introduce you to: motivation theory and goal setting techniques; Neuro-linguistic programing (NLP) approaches, sources of influence and other leadership and management theories that will help you to develop your leadership and enterprise abilities.
This diagram (to the right) explains our basic approach, but don’t worry if it doesn’t quite make sense to you yet. We’ll explain it in the group.
Background
Don’t worry if you have previous experience in leadership or management. This club is designed to be suitable for anyone who is
enthusiastic and ready for a challenge.
I have run a course like this previously, so this course will be a new and improved version of that club (learn about Leadership for Life here).
If you would like to know more about the course leader (Mr Woods), you can access that information here:
Finally, if you’d like, you can contact me here: or you can find me in my classroom K403, (where our meetings will be held).
“Leadership can be thought of as a capacity to define oneself to others in a way that clarifies and expands a vision of the future” (Edwin H. Friedman).
Homework/Group work
3. Please complete the stakeholder analysis for October 12th, so you can present it back to the group.
4. If you haven’t already presented your article to the group please be prepared to do that at our next meeting (Nov 9th). I really enjoyed our last talks from Monica and Danielle. Some really great ideas about work-life balance and Student Wellness. Thanks you two!
5. Okay guys, I have reflections from almost all of you. Unfortunately Mrs Mares says everyone needs to also fill in the standard reflection sheet. I have made this as easy as possible for you to do. I have put 9 copies of the form on this one page. Please scroll down to your name and fill in the info under your name. I will print all of these off on Friday and hand them in for you. It’s a 3 minute job. One sentence answers for each are more than enough because I will also be attaching the great reflections you have already done. Sorry for the extra work. Please try to get it done by the end of the day on Thursday, Dec 1. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1vzTCwQdg6d4JPrvei3EUuons8avZEZAF0HS6CdfsycY/edit (No sign-in necessary. Just fill in and you’re done).
