ToK Homework
Note: All homework is due at the beginning of class on the day mentioned. Homework is not accepted during class. You must complete all homework assigned in class and always have all notes and homework with you in class.
March
1. Please read the following, to help you with your presentations: Woolman (Your Reading)
Downloaded 55 times I should be able to check, either your own (individual) notes on the reading or see that you have a highlighted copy of this reading to show me (on March 15th).
2. Your ToK Essay outline is due on Thursday, March 15. This is a final deadline. You should finish it much earlier, if you can. And your essay itself is due (just a few days later), on Monday, March 19th.
February
1. Your ToK Presentations are due on March 4th.
2. Your CAS Plans and Andy Fletcher Mind Maps are due on Friday, Feb 3rd.
3. Write 200 – 300 words in response to one of the following questions (Due Friday, February 10th).
a) Is Kuhn’s theory plausible? In situations such as the Einstein / Newton one mentioned
above, has a revolution really taken place?
b) Newtonian Mechanics still ‘works’ in most situations. Is it still ‘true’?
c) “The power of science derives from the fact that it combines reason in the form of
mathematics with experience in the form of observational data.” (Lagemaat 239) Explain
how this quote unifies rationalist and empiricist perspectives.
d) In your school science lessons, you have probably been taught ‘out-of-date’ theories (e.g of
atomic structure in chemistry, or Newtonian mechanics in physics). Why do you think this is
done, and is it helpful?
November
1. A few things are coming up with CAS:
Your CAS Consultation (interview) needs to be done during the week of November 28-Dec 1. This is the first for grade 11. These interviews need to be noted on the CAS progress form that I have for you (in your folders). Also, CAS Proposals for anything done during December Holiday are due on December 12th. As well any (and all) paperwork for outside CAS activities are due to Mrs Mares on November 25th by 4pm. This includes: 1) Yellow sheets signed by supervisors, 2) Attendance: with hours totalled and signed and verified by supervisors, and 3) A copy of any certificates if applicable.
2. Again you are working on your reason and emotion presentations (which will start on November 16th) and your TOK Essay (for Q2) is due on Monday, November 21st (this is changed from the previous Friday, to give you more time). (And your CAS reflection #3 is due on November 17th). Here is the modified rubric I’ll be using to mark your TOK Essay.
3. Please enter your semester 1 reflection grades here.
October
1. Don’t forget to hand in your CAS reflection #2 on Thursday, October 20th (in class).
2. Please read this article over the holiday week and be ready to submit a 200 word response in class on Monday, October 31st. Your response should involved original (critical thinking on your part). Please also make sure you are clear what I mean by “critical thinking.”
3. Be advised that November 25th is the deadline for the paperwork for all outside CAS activities. At that point you will need a the showing your attendance in the activity, verified by the outside supervisor: It will either be signed by each day or a note at the bottom stating they can verify all attendance. A yellow sheet (available outside Mrs Marez’ office) signed and filled in by the outside supervisor. Those are due to Mrs Marez on Nov. 25th by 4pm. –Please look at the calender and decide when your last lesson will be to get signatures. You might actually need to get all of your signatures in perhaps 2 weeks before this, depending on how often you see your supervisor.
4. Some upcoming due dates: (Do note that you are going to need to say very organized in order to stay on top of all of these dates, as they are all close together).
The reason and emotion presentation will start on November 16th.
CAS reflection #3 is ude on November 17th.
Your TOK Essay (for Q2) is due on November 18th
September
1. As we talked about in class, your CAS proposal forms are due tomorrow (Friday, Sept 2) before 4pm to Mrs Mares Manton.
- This is for anything that is outside school. If you miss this deadline, it is likely it will not go on Semester 1 report, which will be a problem for many of you. It has been in the Gazette and it is on the deadline sheet you received.
- Make sure you have double checked your plans and that you will have 2 components in 2 areas by end of Semester 1.
- Your CAS plans need to be signed by me (Mr Woods) and filed in your folders (in K403)–this is part of IB documentation that is needed at the end of Year 12.If you want to go down and speak to Mrs Mares, you need to do this before class time.
2. (Changed/Updated) Be ready for a Quiz on Friday, September 9th –on everything we’ve learned so far, including the terms and tests of knowledge given on the handout in class today (Sept 1).
3. Your essay is due on Monday, September 12th. You will want to have completed your Introduction booklet before you do the essay. You should also have a look at this short video, which just came out in the news today.
4. As I explained in class, we won’t have a lesson on Thursday (UN) and on Friday and Monday I will not be in school. However, there is an assignment that we have to get started while I’m away. Mr Hellner is going to give you this assignment on Friday because I won’t see you again until next Thursday and we need to get started, so you’ll have enough time. Please prioritize this presentation assignment over the Senses task (poster assignment) that we started to organize in class on Monday. Don’t worry about the poster assignment until our next class together (on Thursday, Sept 22nd).
5. Please read through the rest of the Perception handout that I gave you in class and spend a half hour or so reflecting on some of the discussion questions in writing. We will however still spend a little more time on this together in class.
6. Your CAS reflections are due on Thursday, September 22nd. 250 words typed. These must be done on the CAS template, which is available in our class resources. Please hand it in on time. If you hand in two of them late, you’ll have to do a Saturday detention, so be careful. If for UN–only one reflection of 500 words–using any questions from reflections 1–2. I will be marking you on your effort, how much you have put into the CAS activities and how considerate you are in your reflections. Again remember that you need 2 components over 2 different areas by Semester 1 (outside activities finish by November 25th).
6. Please read this note I’ve written you about how to write good notes.
7. For homework, please make sure you have reviewed the handout on knowledge issues and filled in the blanks. If you are unsure of what makes a good KI please come and talk to me. Also, please continue to work on your TOK presentations. Here is a booklet to help you, if you’re still struggling with your KI
8. Your first TOK presentations will start on Monday, October 5th.
9. Please respond in your notes to one of the ‘Discussion Point’ questions and one of the ‘Homework’ questions. You should write around 2 normal A4 pages of reflections please.
10. Please make sure you contribute at least 2 definitions (or quotations) on the class glossary before by the end of September.
11. Please read this note about the parent-teacher conferences. (I hope you are able to attend them yourself.) I had wanted to give you this handout in class, but we ran out of time today. If you would like to fill in the handout (attached to the note) before the parent-teacher day that would be great. Otherwise, we can go through it together next week, after your presentations.
August
1. Please read the ToK Class Expectations
2. Please begin working on your TOK journals. You should be writing about 1 page per week. You are basically looking for knowledge claims in your reading (school and non-school) and are looking at the ways we justify things.
3. Your TOK paragraph is due at the beginning of class on Friday, August 25th. This is based on the articles and information on pages 98 and 99 of your text book. The question is 4(a) and 4(b) in your Introduction handout. The four parts of the paragraph are graded out of 3, 2, 3 and 2 respectively.
4. Please complete 6 (a), 6(b) and 6© for homework. Due Monday August 29th.
5. Make sure you are taking the time to write in your ToK Journal. This journal is not a regular journal. It is where you trying to make ToK-type observations on things you’re learning in your classes, things you read in the ToK Course Companion, in newspapers you read and on experiences you have. Look for knowledge claims and explore what evidence is being used to support them. Also don’t forget to bring this to class every lesson along with your notes.
